They’re having a laugh

Postage charges on eBay, I’m talking about.  Those sellers who use eBay as a business.

I recently tried to purchase 16 x 2” circles of wood - I’m making some wooden trucks for my grandchildren and I wanted decent wheels.  Found exactly what I wanted and paid, including a charge of £6.95 for p&p.

I then receive an email asking for a further £6.09 - they’d underestimated the cost of postage!  So they wanted £13 to post a handful of wood.

I cancelled the order and bought a set of drill saws for £10, free p&p. Now I can make as many wheels as I like.

The very same day I bought four 12mm solid metal bars, each 900mm long. Heavy things. Reasonable price - postage & packing? £10.

Both posted from the UK - in fact the same county - to France.

That’s why I always shop around.

eBay should do something about this. It’s ridiculous.  More importantly - people shouldn’t pay it!

Today was the final day of the County Championship season, with Lancashire - promoted as D2 champions last season - facing Middlesex at Old Trafford.
Lancashire needed to win to avoid relegation, Middlesex needed only a draw to maintain their D1 status.
Despite the heroics of Lancashire captain Glen Chapple they were unable to come up with the win they needed and are down.
There will no doubt be plenty of changes to the Lancashire squad before next season, with Chapple expected to retire at the age of 40.

Clamps for small picture frames (150mm or less).

Few bits of MDF, curtain hooks and some elastic bands.

This is known as the New Fangled Workbench, designed by John White, which first appeared in Fine Woodworking  magazine in 1999.

Since then several versions/modifications to it have appeared, with examples easy to find via the internet and on YouTube.

The bench is simple to build, using construction grade timber and MDF and requires no glueing. It uses four Jorgensen (or similar) pipe clamps, arranged in pairs for an end vice and front vice. It’s versatility is amazing.

A video of John White outlining the features of the bench can be viewed HERE and a PDF file of the bench is available HERE.

I am currently gathering together all the hardware needed - pipe clamp assemblies, iron pipe, etc - so I can build a small version of it - 5’ x 2’.

If YouTube videos are anything to go by then you’re not a proper woodworker unless you have a block plane.
So a Stanley 9 1/2” for not a lot of money is winging it’s way to France.
The practice setting up the No 4 Draper might stand me in good stead after all!

Yesterday there were 50+ swallows sat on these wires and another 50 at least flying around.
Today they are all gone. So summer is over.
They’re missing some glorious late summer weather though.
